It happens to all of us. We head outdoors for some fun in the sun and forget to take the sunscreen. If you are out enjoying a sunny summer day and feel like you’re getting a sunburn, move out of the sun right away. While the burning sensation will subside and the sunburn will eventually heal, each time you burn your chances of developing skin cancer increase.
If you do get a sunburn, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends taking these steps:
1. Place a cold, damp towel on the sunburned skin for at least 10 minutes several times every day.
2. After showering or bathing, leave some moisture on your skin as you gently pat yourself dry. Apply a moisturizer to damp skin.
3. Use a moisturizing lotion that contains Aloe Vera or soy.
4. Avoid lotions with petroleum, benzocaine, or lidocaine.
5. Take ibuprofen to reduce swelling and discomfort.
6. Be sure to drink extra water to prevent dehydration.
7. If they appear, do not touch or pop blisters because doing so could lead to infection.
8. If you feel sick, you may need to see a doctor.
Enjoy the outdoors this summer, but try to limit your exposure to the sun’s rays. And carry a good sunscreen in your purse, overnight bag, and car so that you’ll always have it with you when you need it.
